The 48,000-square-foot, $8.5 million plant is one of the largest enclosed C&D recycling plants in the country. The company is permitted to accept 1,500 tons of municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris per day.

Inside the Plant

The conveyor feeds the primary grinder, a CBI Annihilator carefully surrounded with a concrete blast shield (in the event of an missed propane tank). Material then moves to an Action Screener to remove 6” minus.
Very soon the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will implement a statewide ban on dumping certain types of waste materials into landfills. The ban, in part, restricts the dumping of full-sized C&D waste into landfills. These materials must be processed for recycling purposes, with only a limited amount of downsized material allowed to go into landfills.
To comply with the new restrictions and to continue to lead in the business of waste processing, Mike Camara, President of ABC Disposal Service, created New Bedford Waste Services in order to process the material at its facility.
In 2002, Camara contacted Newton, NH-based Continental Biomass Industries, Inc. (CBI), requesting the equipment manufacturer’s assistance in building a waste processing facility for his new business. Together, Camara and CBI designed and built a system that is not only efficient, but extremely flexible.
With a versatile system, New Bedford Waste is able to focus heavily on the markets that are most profitable at any given time. New Bedford Waste Services frequently analyzes the market conditions, prices and efficiencies involved in sending the various finished products to their customers both in and out of state. At the touch of a button, they are able to switch from producing a wood product to grading materials.
Along with processing/recycling of construction and demolition debris, New Bedford Waste Services is also permitted to transfer municipal solid waste for final disposal at various landfills and trash to energy plants. The ability to provide these services to South Eastern Massachusetts communities has benefited the various disposal companies and residents in the surrounding area.
